Indeed, carvacrol is what gives oregano its spicy flavor and it offers a range of important health benefits, including antimicrobial and antifungal activity, antioxidant power, and liver protection.   Most of the testing on oregano oil’s antifungal, antiviral and other properties has been done on oregano oil with between 62 and 85% carvacrol. Zane Hellas’s range of oregano oil supplements contain a minimum of 86% carvacrol.

May help balance blood sugar

Studies have shown that extracts containing carvacrol can help to resolve blood sugar irregularities, without side effects.  The Ministry of Health, Labour, and Social Welfare in the former Soviet country Georgia has approved an herbal remedy containing carvacrol as therapeutic support for blood sugar problems. Medical trials have shown that oregano oil can lower blood sugar without side effects.  In a 2013 medical study, carvacrol partially reversed the symptoms of diabetes.

Kills bacteria and candida

Carvacrol can inhibit the growth of or kill a wide range of pathogens. It works by inhibiting these bacteria by damaging the bacteria’s cell membrane integrity.  Unlike pharmaceutical antibiotics,  carvacrol has a very minimal impact on probiotic species found in the gut (good bacteria) and at concentrations which cause 97%-100% inhibition of pathogens, there’s typically only 3%-5% inhibition of probiotics.  Carvacrol is also a powerful antifungal and a study conducted in 2011 found that carvacrol was very effective in treating oral Candida yeast overgrowth taken from people who wore dentures.

Carvacrol doesn’t just cleanse and purify your body, it can also clean and disinfect your home.  In one medical study, concentrations of oregano oil eliminated Listeria biofilms from stainless steel and plastic surfaces.  You can even use it to wash produce.  A medical study compared the effects of carvacrol with chlorine when washing salmonella-infected grape tomatoes.  They found that carvacrol was effective against salmonella and had the added benefit of not reducing the tomatoes’ nutritional or antioxidant value.

Promotes normal blood lipid levels

When LDL cholesterol is oxidized it can accumulate on the artery walls and increase your chance of heart disease. Carvacrol has demonstrated protective effects for LDL against oxidation. your risk of coronary disease and heart attack. A study published in 2007 analyzed the effects of several beneficial plant oils against LDL oxidation and found that oregano oil was the most effective – due to its carvacrol content.

Fights inflammation and swelling

Clinical evidence suggests carvacrol may defend against chronic inflammation, with tests revealing that it suppresses COX-2 expression, a primary cause of inflammation. Chronic inflammation is the precursor for many diseases and is even linked to cancer.  A 2013 medical study concluded: “carvacrol causes anti-inflammatory effects by reducing the production of inflammatory mediators.”
